Treasure from the Goodwill Bins

I was pretty lucky this past Saturday at the Goodwill Outlet :) It seemed that the crazed shoppers managed to leave behind quite a few vintage treasures for me!

Marble Mushroom; Crystal Wine Stopper; Mini Golden Records; Girl Scout Wallet/Belt; Little Soldier; All: Goodwill Outlet (<$1 total)
I had quite a streak of finding old children's items! Of these, my favorites are the little golden records! I love how they look on my wall by my new 'desk' :)

Speaking of which, my wonderful hubby got me my Valentine's Day present early- a new chair for my desk!!! I am so excited about it! I'll definitely be showing you guys sometime this week, since I couldn't wait till the actual holiday to put it in place :)

I hope you have a great Monday!

My Thrifting Outfit: Military + Zebra

I was sooooo excited to find a military-inspired wool coat at Plato's Closet for ten bucks!!!! I've been looking for a good-quality, warm coat all winter, and this one is my dream come true :)

And when I think 'military coat' what comes to mind to go with it? A bright blue cardigan and a zebra shirt! Anyone with me?

Ray Bans, Goodwill in Pensacola; Zebra Shirt, Jeans, Cardigan, Scarf, and Vintage Whiting & Davis Bag, Goodwill Richmond; Jack Purcell for Converse Shoes, JCrew Warehouse Sale; Coat, Plato's Closet
I don't ever wear these jeans that I picked up at my local Goodwill a couple months ago. They're tricky to style for a short person like me, but they're thick and warm so I gave it a try! I think I'll mostly stick to my boot-cut jeans, but every once in awhile it's nice to rock some wide-leg ones!

On another note, I found some awesome things at Goodwill Outlet yesterday :) Just little things, but they're pretty cool!

Have a fantastic Sunday, everyone :)

Friday Web Round-Up and Giveaway Reminder!

While I did get a couple of things from the estate sale we went to on Sunday, I never managed to photograph them! Whoops!

Time has just flown by this week, but I would like to share a couple of blogs I've been reading non-stop :)

1) I don't know how I never heard of the blog Thrift Core until this week, but trust me, it's awesome! We're talking thrifted finds, great organization tips, and DIY. It's a lovely, very well-designed blog that I just know you'll love, so check it out!

2) Another blog I've been reading the past week is I Heart Vintage. The blog's writer Kavita is based in the UK, and she takes the loveliest outfit and car boot finds photos! I've always found stories from 'across the pond' very interesting, and this blog is no exception :)

3) One of my very own readers has an awesome blog called The Lemon Tree! Alyssa shows us her thrift finds (some great ones!), her cute but mischievous pup, and her love of Pyrex :) Talk about my kind of girl! Check out her blog asap!

4) You have until tonight to enter the Another's Treasure vintage jewelry giveaway!!! I'm so excited to be able to share some of my finds with my fabulous readers- YOU! :)

Have a wonderful Friday- TGIF!!

I Love the 90s Strikes Back

Oh, the 90s. I was in elementary and middle school during that decade, and it was good times :) I owned about 10 of those fuzzy feather pens, a million and one chokers from Afterthoughts, and about 20 journals full of my pre-teen angst and Hanson photos!

Picture Frame, Goodwill Outlet (<$1)

My middle school self just had to have this picture frame at Goodwill Outlet on Saturday! Stars, sparkles, and 90s goodness= perfection.

There's something comforting in being able to find pieces of the past in random bins for less than a dollar.

Always,
Amanda

My Thrifting Outfit: Bans and Stripes

I've been having fun with sunglasses lately- most notably, my new red heart-shaped ones! But on Sunday, I was in the mood to rock the classic Ray Bans I thrifted in Pensacola last year :)

Ray Bans, Goodwill in Pensacola; Jacket, F21; Floral Shirt, Goodwill; Jeans, Goodwill; Scarf, Christmas gift; Dooney & Bourke Bag, Goodwill; Leather Boots, Urban Outfitters (2008)
I liked this photo that the hubby took, even though it's crooked :) (He says it's 'artsy crooked'!) These two trees by our apartment always make a great backdrop!

I just kind of threw this outfit together of some of my favorites, and I really liked it. I guess pairing all the things you love makes an outfit you love :) Wow. We're getting pretty deep here for a Tuesday, huh? ;)

Have a great one!

A Pretty Shell Necklace from the Bins!

This past Saturday, I only made it to Goodwill Outlet. It was way too cold outside to so much more than run from the car to the thrift shop and then back home!

Luckily, I did manage to pull a little handful of vintage costume jewelry from the bins :) Although most of it has metal pieces (I'll be doing a giveaway soon!), this one I'm going to refashion into a longer necklace:

Vintage Shell Necklace, Goodwill Outlet (<$1)
Isn't it pretty? :) I'm excited to sport it this coming spring and summer! I really love shell necklaces because they remind me of Florida.

The hubby and I went to pretty cool estate sale yesterday and found some cool things! I can't wait to show them to you all this week :)

My Thrifting Outfit: Royal Blue

I was very excited to find this thick-knit vintage cardigan at my local Goodwill the other night! It's warm, brightly colored, and fun- all things I need to get through a cold winter :)

Unfortunately, the sky wasn't as blue as my sweater yesterday- it was very overcast and cold. So much so that when I found a brand-new pair of Isotoner slippers in the Goodwill Outlet bins, I had to get them and wear them the rest of the day!!

Lace Shirt, Goodwill; Vintage Blue Cardigan, Goodwill; Beaded Necklace, Good Samaritan; Jeans, Target via Goodwill; Isotoner Slippers, Goodwill Outlet; Dooney & Bourke Bag, Goodwill; Yellow Watch, eBay
I definitely wasn't expecting it to be as cold as it was outside yesterday! I came home after just Goodwill Outlet!

I found some interesting little things at G.O., despite some extremely crazed shoppers. I might even have another giveaway soon, since I found some cool metal jewelry!

Amanda

Another Use For...Random Household Things

I think I mentioned that my hubby is going back to school. Well, because of this he needs our desk and office chair more than I do! I've relocated myself to the odd-shaped corner by our sliding glass door, and I desperately needed my own computer space.

With a certain girlie office flair in mind, I gathered items from around our apartment and set up a mini office!

Butterfly Wall Art, Vintage Frames, 'Key' Holder, Wooden Cup, Vintage Celluloid Duck, Hats, Tiger Rug, Folding Table, Floral Sheet, Beads; All: Thrifted/Estate Sale; Chair and Floor Lamp, Target Clearance (two years ago); Mustache, Party Store; Floral Headband, A Thought is the Blossom shop
Most everything here was thrifted or found at estate sales this past year! The desk was one of those folding tables you use to eat by the TV, the 'tablecloth' covering the desk is a vintage sheet, and of course you recognize my tiger rug! It's so soft that I couldn't resist using it in my desk area :)

I'm on the search for a new chair (with a back) that will be more comfy, but otherwise this is my little blog place for awhile. I like the girlie vintage vibe, and that I was able to create it out of things just lying around :)

The Rhinestone Guitar

So I didn't leave the antiques mall with the guitar I wanted on Monday, but I did leave with a guitar of sorts.

When I saw this pretty vintage rhinestone guitar pin in one of the cases, I had to have it! It was definitely more in my price range than the $350 guitar, too :)

Vintage Guitar Pin, West End Antiques ($10)
I've been wearing it on my black biker sweater, and I love the Elvis-like effect! While I've seen old guitar pins and brooches, they've never been as cool as this one :)

Of course, I had to splurge a little bit to get it (is it sad that $10 is a splurge?), but it's totally worth it!

Now, if I could just find an extra $350 sitting around for the real guitar...

Have a great Friday, everyone :)

My Thrifting Outfit: Faux Fur and Flowers

Monday I had the day off for MLK Day- so naturally the hubby and I visited one of our favorite antique malls!

West End Antiques is a huge place that happens to also hold the guitar that I really want! I played it again when we were there Monday, and I'm still in love :)

Anyway...here's both what I wore, and one of the things I found:

Vintage Faux Fur Hat, West End Antiques; Striped Shirt, Goodwill; Vintage Pins, Good Samaritan; Floral Bag, Goodwill; Jeans, Goodwill; Mustard Flats, Plato's Closet; Biker Jacket, F21
I love my new faux fur hat!!!! It's big and comfy and warm...and it was less than a dollar! Man, I love when already low-priced things are 65 percent off :)

For some reason, I'm also really into florals right now. Hence the floral bag and two flower pins :)

I got one more really cool thing at West End Antiques, but I'll save that for tomorrow!

Amanda

A Piece of Florida

I didn't find much on Saturday's thrifting outing, but I did pick up a new needlepoint! I love the down-home feel of vintage needlepoint art, especially when it reminds me of my home state :)

Seagulls Needlepoint, Good Samaritan ($0.50)
Florida is known for sunshine, beaches, and lots and lots of seagulls! Although some people think of them as a sort of rat (because they like to eat scraps off the ground), the sound of a seagull brings me back to my childhood.

It's nice to have a small piece of that feeling of home here with me in Virginia. Now, if only my little brother would come visit me!! (Miss you, Andrew!)

My Thrifting Outfit: The Canadian Tuxedo

Although I've done it before, I'm always a little wary of the denim-on-denim trend. It always makes me think back to those unfortunate photos of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in their matching 'Canadian tuxedos'. Remember the ones?

Well, I took another stab at it on Sunday, and I really liked it! The trick, I think, is wearing different shades of denim and keeping it simple. (No jean dresses as red carpet attire!)

Heart Sunnies, eBay; Denim Shirt, Target Clearance; Vest, F21 via Goodwill; Jeans, Goodwill; Sparkly Gold Flats, Goodwill; Floral Purse, Goodwill; Necklace, Thrift Store in Florida
This photo was taken by my hubby! (As you can probably tell by the silly pose I'm trying to make...) He was off work and school on Sunday, and we spent the day lazily visiting different shops and thrifts.

After a long-ish weekend (I had to work a half-day Saturday), I'm back to work today. But you know what Mondays off mean? Short weeks, and just a few more days until it's back to the thrifts!

Another Use For... Wire Kitchen Decor

Since I seem to rarely use my thrifted items as they were originally intended, I thought I'd start a new feature. I'll show you how to look at the ordinary and see something different and a bit quirky, as it seems to come pretty naturally to me :)

First, here's my newly thrifted wire kitchen rooster:

Wire Rooster, Goodwill Outlet (<$1)
I can imagine him in his original home: a country-themed kitchen that always smelled like fresh cinnamon rolls or those scented pine cones. Now, this little guy serves as the perfect-sized container for vintage beads and jewelry!

A wire kitchen container would also be great for holding spools of thread or bits of fabric, if you're the DIY type :)

Have a great Monday, and happy MLK Day!

Amanda

My Thrifting Outfit: Floral with a Side of Mustard

It was warm-ish yesterday, and you know what that means!! Big Mustard time :) This cardigan is perfect for sunny, mild winter weather. Plus, wearing it always puts me in a great mood!

Heart Sunnies, eBay; Lace Shirt, Goodwill; Jeans, Goodwill; Doc Martins, Goodwill; Floral Purse, Goodwill; Necklace, gift from Mom and Dad from Mexico
After posting yesterday's kind of 'out there' outfit, I felt like toning it down a bit. Big Mustard and my heart sunnies is probably enough (crazy former hippie) for one outfit :)

Oh, and remember how I was searching for a floral and leather purse for ages? Well, I found one at Goodwill last week!! It's high-quality and just what I was looking for. It's so much fun actually finding the things on your thrift list :)

My Thrifting Outfit: The Preppy Hippy

This past Wednesday, I got off work early and decided to make a Goodwill run. (Which was unfortunately not successful.)

I did have fun throwing an outfit together though, mixing my new eBayed heart sunglasses with my 'teacher' necklace and bowling shoes. Add my leopard print bag and classic preppy staples, and it was definitely an odd mash-up :)

Heart Sunnies, eBay ($3!); Plaid Shirt, Target Clearance; Vintage Thalhimer's Sweater, Goodwill; Vintage Bowling Shoes, Good Samaritan; Levi's Jeans, Dillards gift card; Leopard Print Bag, gift from hubby; Teacher Necklace, Midlothian Antiques; 'B' Pin, Twice as Nice
This was my first time wearing my vintage bowling shoes in an outfit picture! I thrifted them when my mom was in town in October, and they are really comfy and neat :)

I know this outfit is kind of random, but I think it came together okay. Maybe next time I'm wearing so many different things, I'll use a more neutral purse!

Well, I've got to get off to work for a couple hours, and then it's thrift time! Tomorrow, the hubby and I are going to see The Black Swan, so it should be a pretty great weekend :)

Polly the Parrot

The hubby is back in school, so Guy Finds Friday won't be around for a while. (Poor hubby has to study!)

Luckily, I had enough finds this past Saturday to share all week :) Here's another Goodwill Outlet bin treasure- Polly the Parrot:

Parrot Art, Goodwill Outlet (<$1)
Now this, the hubby likes! You'd think the Tiger rug would be more of a guy thing, but nope- a Parrot with flowers is perfect for our apartment :) Oh, hubby!
I feel that I should paint and fix the frame- do a sort of 'before and after' DIY thing. Is it bad that I kind of like it as-is?

Happy Friday, everyone :) I have to work tomorrow morning, but after I'll be headed to the thrifts!

My New Favorite Necklace

When I spotted this necklace on Saturday at Midlothian Antiques, I knew I had to have it! Of course, the hubby's not a huge fan. (He said it reminded him of a grade-school teacher! I said, 'What's wrong with that? Teachers are pretty awesome!!')

I like how huge the beads are, and how they're reminiscent of vintage bakelite. And that it's an awesome piece of non-metal jewelry!

Vintage Beaded Necklace, Midlothian Antiques ($4)
I've been wearing it pretty much non-stop, excluding work, and it matches everything! If this necklace gives me that schoolteacher look- bring it on!

Well, as long as I don't actually have to teach. God bless you, teachers. For real :)

The Eye of the Tiger

No, this post isn't about that annoying 80s song of the same name (sorry if I got it stuck in your head!), but it is about the most awesome rug ever.

Remember that tiger wall art I really wanted in Florida that the hubby wouldn't let me get? Well, he gave in on this find from Saturday:

Handmade Tiger Rug, Love of Jesus ($1)

I'm soooo excited about this tacky-tastic rug! I plan on trimming the unfinished sides and hanging it on the wall in our apartment :)

I know some people might think I'm crazy to love this so much, but hey- I was born in the year of the tiger! That's my excuse for loving crazy tiger things, and I'm sticking to it :)

Have a great Wednesday!

Twice as Nice

I think I mentioned yesterday that my sis-in-law showed me her favorite thrift store on Saturday. Twice as Nice in Chesterfield, VA, is known for their large selection of jewlery, most priced at just 95 cents!

The best part? If you get 10 pieces of the bargain jewlery, you get another one free! Which is of course what I did:

Random Jewelry, Twice as Nice ($0.95 each)
You all know how much I love pins! I couldn't resist the girl necklace either, although I'll have to put her on a non-metal chain :)

I can't seem to find any info online about this little shop, but it's located in Chesterfield off Hull Street if you live in the area!

The Painted Lady

I had such a great thrifting day Saturday! We took my sis-in-law out to my favorite thrifts, and she showed me one of her favorites! I found all sorts of lovely things, but I'm going to share the girliest one first :)

Handmade 1960s Lady Lipstick Holder, 60 West Antiques ($5)
She's the perfect size to twirl necklaces around, and to hold little pins! (As I only have one tube of lipstick to my name, which I never even use...)

I actually had been wanting this for awhile, but it was placed at the very top of a shelf in this little antique mall, and I always forgot about it. Once the hubby got it down for me, I liked it even more! Such a unique and cool thing to have :)

More neat finds tomorrow!

Amanda

My Thrifting Outfit: Snow Way

I wasn't really expecting it to snow on Friday night and yesterday morning! But there it was as me, Josh, and his sis woke up for a day of thrifting...

Luckily nothing was closed, although I did have to throw on my wolf hat!! Almost every other part of my outfit was from Goodwill!

Floral Rayon Shirt, Goodwill; Vintage Nordstrom Striped Sweater, Goodwill; Jeans, Goodwill; Doc Martins, Goodwill; Vintage Coach Bag, Goodwill Outlet; Tan Jacket, Goodwill; Sunglasses Pin, gift from sis-in-law; Wolf Hat, gift from hubby
I got the Doc Martins the other night at my local Goodwill, and they are amazing! They kept my feet warm, comfy, and dry all day! And one of the Love of Jesus workers said they were awesome :)

I can't wait to show you all what I found! It was probably one of the best thrifting days I've had in awhile :)

The Golden Sparkly Shoes of My Dreams

Everyone, meet the shiniest, gold-iest shoes ever!!!!

Shiny Shoes, Goodwill ($4)
I found these lovelies at my local Goodwill the other night! I just love anything that sparkles :)

Short post today- I'm off to a day of thrifting with my hubby and sis-in-law!!!

Guy Finds Friday: Going Rogue

Hi everyone, and welcome to another Guy Finds Friday with Josh!

This week, Amanda found me an awesome new pilsner glass- Dead Guy Ale, brewed in Oregon by the Rogue Brewing Company.

She likes it for the heft of the glass, but I just think beer tastes best in a pre-frosted, guy-themed pilsner glass.

Pilsner Glass, Goodwill Outlet (<$1)
So lets everyone raise our thrifted beer glasses for a Guy Finds Friday toast! Cheers to thrifty, amazing wives!

Until next week,
Josh

The Guitar that Got Away

On Sunday, I went to West End Antiques to lazily browse. Instead of just cool vintage trinkets, I found this great Fender resonator guitar sitting in it's red-lined case. Unfortunately, it was out of my price range. But you guys, I am in love:

I told my hubby about this lovely Fender, and he wanted to see it too! We went and visited it last night, and to my surprise, they raised the price even more! Now, the beautiful guitar love of my life costs just as much as it does online!

Needless to say, this guitar has been added to the list of 'ones that got away.' I wish I would've done a video of me playing it for you, because I think you all would agree that it's just perfect :) (And I could have impressed you with my halfway-decent rendition of 'Blackbird'!)

My Thrifting Outfit: Plaid + A Dash of Red

Sunday's weather wasn't great (it rained alllll day), but at least it wasn't super cold! One of my clearance rack Target flannel shirts and my faux-leather biker jacket provided just the right amount of warmth, although I could've used an umbrella!

Because of the rain, I only took one quick outfit shot. With my tripod propped on my car, I made a run for the brick wall of our apartment building and tried to smile. I think it turned out pretty good, considering :)

Plaid Flannel, Target Clearance; Jacket, F21; Red Beaded Necklace, Thrifted in Florida; Jeans, Dillard's (gift card); Steve Madden Oxfords, Rugged Wearhouse (gift from hubby!)
I don't know if you can tell, but I wore my favorite thrifted red necklace and some red lipgloss to match! I know I should probably wear colored lip stuff more, but I always forget to put it on :)

And let's talk about these awesome shoes for a minute. They are really high-quality leather oxfords, and they were a steal! We're talking fourteen bucks! When the hubby saw how much I wanted them, he got them for me for Christmas :)

I spent Sunday aimlessly drifting through West End Antiques, where I found something I wish I could've bought! I'll tell you more about it tomorrow :)

Amanda

The Benefits of Holiday Thrifting :)

Saturday was New Year's Day, but that didn't stop me (and about 15 other people) from heading to Goodwill Outlet when it opened at noon!

The biggest benefit to thrifting on a holiday? There's actually pretty good stuff left! Case in point- a vintage leather Coach backpack purse that was just waiting for me to grab it :)

Vintage Coach Backpack Purse, Goodwill Outlet ($2)
It was pretty cool to find this, since a couple months ago I spent hours searching for an affordable one on etsy! Of course, none of them were cheap enough for my thrifty taste :) I just couldn't justify spending $30 or $40 on something I might find for $2. Sometimes, being a cheapskate pays off!

The drawback to going thrifting on the holiday was that none of my other favorite thrifts were open. Oh well! At least I have this coming weekend :)

Always,
Amanda

PS: Have any of you had a great find lately?? I'd love to hear about it!

Treasure from the Goodwill Outlet Bins

While it wasn't a goldmine of vintage at Goodwill Outlet on New Year's, the couple things I found were pretty special :)

Here are my two favorite finds from Saturday, a handmade bunny stuffed animal and a vintage Canon camera!

Bunny and Canon Camera, Goodwill Outlet (~$2)
I love the look of old cameras, but I've never found a vintage Canon one until now! It's really well-made and solid, with what I'm sure used to be a fancy lens and settings. I wish I knew how to fix up old cameras, because this one would be fun to actually use!

And the bunny matches my vintage quilted stuffed bear, so I had to get it! I love handmade stuffed animals- it's like you can see the love that went into making them :)

Have a great Monday!

My Thrifting Outfit: A Happy New Year Crown

The hubby and I had a nice, quiet New Year's Eve Friday night. We watched the ball drop, popped poppers from Target that contained paper crowns and toys, and had sparkling grape juice!

My New Year's Day was just as laid back. I slept in, cleaned the apartment, went to Goodwill Outlet and got some treasures, and came home :) What a relaxing way to start the new year, right? Here's my New Year's thrifting outfit:

Paper Crown, New Year's Popper from Target; Angry Wolf Shirt, Goodwill; Jeans, Dillard's (gift card); Jacket, F21 (with Christmas money!); Purse, Handmade from Africa (gift from Dad); Flower Pins, Good Samaritan; Rhinestone Pin (gift from sis-in-law); Leopard Print Flats, Love of Jesus
I wanted to show off some of my Christmas/ Christmas money presents! I was able to get this F21 moto sweatshirt jacket with Christmas money from my in-laws, and these jeans from another gift card from Christmas :) The unique purse was a souvenir that my dad brought back for me when he went to Africa on a mission trip last year!

And my sis-in-law did a great job with the presents she got me- a whole bundle of neat pins :) I especially love the rhinestone one since it resembles military honors when pinned on my new jacket. (Well, very girly, sparkly military honors, anyway...)

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

Always,
Amanda

PS: Since I know my dad will wonder, no I didn't wear the paper hat all day! Lol :)

Thrifty Blogger of the Month: Sarah of Five Camels!

Happy New Year, everyone! I can't think of a better way to start it off than with my favorite feature: Thrifty Blogger of the Month :)

This month's blogger is Sarah, of the blog Five Camels. Her blog is really lovely- with posts featuring her beautiful home that she decorates on a budget, her thrifted finds, and anecdotes about married life. Plus, she lives in Richmond too!

I actually met Sarah this past summer at Goodwill Outlet- she had read about G.O. on this blog and now she loves it too :) I'm so glad she agreed to be January's thrifty blogger, since she's a woman after my own thrifty heart! Everyone, meet Sarah:
_________________________________________________________________

Sarah shows off her $2 Goodwill Outlet Uggs! (Photo courtesy of Five Camels)
Another's Treasure: When did you first start thrift shopping, and why did you begin?

Five Camels: I was in grad school studying to be a Physician Assistant. (So I'd been in college for approximately 40 million years.) I had previously relied on a wardrobe full of flip flops and toe socks. Suddenly, I was on rotations and required to wear Grown Up Clothes... on a budget of negative 5 dollars. ;)

I cringed as I drove myself to Goodwill. Two hours later... I was a total convert. I left Goodwill with a bag full of Ann Taylor sweaters, J. Crew skirts, and Banana Republic pants. I've never been able to sleep in on a Saturday again. ;)

AT:  What do you consider your best thrifted find ever?

FC: My practically new, white, slipcovered, Ikea Ektorp couch. Or maybe my $2 Uggs. Can I have two categories?

Sarah's thrifted IKEA couch in her lovely home. (Photo courtesy of Five Camels)
AT: What would be the ultimate coolest thing to see for a dollar at a thrift store?

FC: Another Ektorp couch? Man Town needs a new couch. But, coolest thing that might actually be a dollar? I have to say, I totally covet your leopard print Jimmy Choos. I'd like to find some of those in zebra, please!

AT: I'll keep a lookout! Do you have any tips on finding great things while thrifting?

FC: I am a total brand-whore. I rarely try anything on that's not absurdly expensive in the "real world." I also try to limit myself to things that are in excellent condition. I'll sew on a button, or mend a tiny hole, but if it needs more than that it stays on the rack. It's only a bargain if you're going to get some serious wear out of it!
____________________________________________________________________

Thank you so much, Sarah! Everyone, make sure to check out Sarah's blog Five Camels!!

Always,
Amanda
